Covenant House Vancouver exists for youth aged 16 - 24 who have fled physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse, those who have been forced from their homes and those who have aged out of foster care.
Recognizing that the youth we serve have often experienced trauma, Covenant House Vancouver is committed to being a Trauma Informed Agency. As such, the staff and board of Covenant House Vancouver hold an awareness that the youth who come to us may have been impacted by a single incident, intergenerational or complex trauma, and/or complex stress. Furthermore, we believe that trauma can be both a cause and a product of homelessness.
Trauma Informed Practice is in keeping with Covenant House Vancouver’s principles of structure, sanctuary, value communication, choice, and immediacy. Within our existing framework of attachment-based interventions, Covenant House Vancouver believes that safe relationships are the vehicle by which youth can begin to address and heal from their trauma.
Our case management teams consisting of social workers, clinical counsellors and youth workers work closely with youth to create individuals plans which will help them progress with their mental health, education, employment and housing goals. We teach them life skills such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning and time management so they can confidently move out on their own and achieve lasting independence outside of Covenant House Vancouver.
Covenant House Vancouver is 95% privately funded and relies on the generosity of over 55,000 individuals and organizations to provide love, shelter, food, clothing and other essential resources to over 1000 youth each year.
